About Alder & Ivy
In the autumn of 1903, twelve women at a small liberal-arts college made each other a promise: to seek always that which is noble, gracious and true — together. That promise became Alder & Ivy.
Alder & Ivy began with twelve founders, one borrowed parlor room, and a shared belief that college women deserved a community built on encouragement rather than competition. They chose the alder — which thrives in difficult soil — and the ivy, which climbs by holding on to others, as their emblems.
Today more than 120,000 initiated sisters carry that promise into 180 collegiate chapters and 45 alumnae circles. We tutor children, fund scholarships, mentor first-generation students, and show up for each other at weddings, bedside vigils, board meetings and baby showers.
What hasn’t changed is the heart of it: a circle of women who believe confidence is built together, and who measure a life by what it gives away.

What we stand for
We choose the harder right over the easier wrong — in classrooms, careers and communities.
We practice hospitality of the heart: every woman welcomed, every story honored, every sister seen.
We speak honestly and keep our promises — to our sisters, our campuses and ourselves.
We give our time, talent and resources generously, and we have fun doing it — service is a celebration.
Our National Council — seven alumnae elected by delegates from every chapter — stewards the mission alongside a dedicated headquarters staff.
Tour a chapter, meet the women, and picture yourself in the circle.
